YCW India demands Equality between men and women for a better world for all…….
Dharna (Protest Sdharna_photo_1.jpgtreet Meeting) by YCW India

We organised a Dharna (Protest meeting) on 7th March from 3 to 5 pm at the centre of the town at Thanjavur to celebrate the International Women Day and to demand the rights of young women workers. 40 YCW members, 35 supporters of YCW participated in the activity. More than 1000 people paid attention to our demands. Our young leaders assumed the leadership of this activity through leading the activity; giving speeches and raising the demands through slogans. Ms. Tamil Selvi, secretary All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) Thanjavur district and Mr. Manoharan, secretary Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU) addressed the public and supported our demands. We also distributed our demands through the pamphlets to the public who were passing us. We demanded our government to ensure the following:

·         Ensure equal rights to womendharna_photo_4.jpg

·         Maternity protection

·         Protection of family responsibilities

·         Implement the 8 hours per day as working hours

·         Implement the minimum wage to the agricultural workers

·         Increase the unemployment benefit

The local TV in its evening news highlighted our activity (Dharna). 3 local news papers also published our activity on 8th of March.

Do you know…..

·         Some differences between men and women are natural (Biological differences) and some had been made by ourselves and our society (Gender differences)

·     The different expectations we have about men and women are called Gender Roles

·      Women work 16 hours for every 10 hours of work done by men

·       The jobs done by women are considered less important than those by men. The rewards are less respect, less status and less power

·       Women are more restricted than men in the choice they can make

·       Women are more vulnerable than men

·        The double job (work place and home) for women is tiring and stressful and it leaves no time for women to develop talents

 Do you know we can….

·         Change the gender differences by changing our attitude

·         And must claim that the international and labour tights related to women are respected

·         Bring more women in the leadership roles in our organisations and trade unions

·         Make this world better for all through the equality between men and women
